Barry died on Tuesday 23rd June in Kumluca Hospital where he had been admitted following a road accident. He was 73 years old.
Barry discovered Kalkan in the late 90s when he came on holiday with his wife Sue, who sadly passed away in 2013. After falling in love with the place, they moved out here permanently in August 2006.
Taking early retirement gave Barry and Sue several precious years together, where they were able to live life to the full. This included many trips to places of interest all over Turkey.
Over the years Barry developed a great circle of friends in Kalkan amongst expats and also the Turkish community. The local taxi drivers nicknamed him ‘Barry Beş’ which translates as ‘Barry Five’ as they all knew him and for quite some time he had his own unique taxi fare of just five lira to take him home.
In the recent KTLN Kalkan survey when asked what he liked most about Kalkan Barry said “the local community”. He was loved by many and he loved them. He will be greatly missed.
Barry’s son Glen and daughter Lisa are in Kalkan now and told us they have felt the enormous love and support of the amazing community in Kalkan that Barry cherished and can easily see why he loved it so much. They would like to thank everyone for everything they have done. “Kalkan has given us some great memories and will always hold a special place in our hearts” they said.
Barry will be laid to rest in Kalkan cemetery but we don't have details of when this will happen. An update will be published when we know more. UPDATE: The burial will take place on Friday 26th June at 11.00. Then afterwards between 12.00 and 17.00 people will gather at Mimosa on Kalamar Road, followed by a drink at Bezirgan's Pub, one of Barry's favourite spots.
We send our condolences to Barry's family and friends.
Love KTLN. Love Kalkan.
