4. KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020 - your views on Kalkan

KTLN Survey KTLN Survey

Although we believe our survey sample is probably representative of most non-Turkish visitors to Kalkan, the following numbers and percentages relate to our survey sample only

In our analysis, we may extrapolate the data where we believe it makes sense.

We had 552 responses this year.  Thank you if you took part.

Remember that the majority of our 552 respondents represent a household or group of people.  We estimate the total number of people represented is over 1,700.

Some percentages may not total 100% due to rounding.

This is a long article.  Hopefully you can pick and choose the bits you are most interested in.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

Take a deep breath.  99% of you are very satisfied, or satisfied with air quality in Kalkan.  Some things never change.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

97% of you are very satisfied, or satisfied with the cleanliness of the sea, (2016: 94%).

The decline seen over recent surveys appears to have been reversed.  We wonder what happened to cause this change of view.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

72% of respondents are either very satisfied or satisfied with the peace and quiet in Kalkan. (2016: 69%), whilst 8% are either very dissatisfied or dissatisfied (2016: 12%).   Looking at your comments, we conclude that issues are related to loud music from bars, barking dogs at night and construction noise in the tourist season.  [Also see "Your comments" later in this report].

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

No change here year on year, with virtually 100% saying the views are great!  Who would have guessed??!!

Kalkan panorama

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

86% are very satisfied, or satisfied with access, (2016: 81%).

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

83% are very satisfied, or satisfied with the beachclubs, (2016: 70%).  If you strip out those who have no opinion, (perhaps they don't use beachclubs), then 92% are either very satisfied or satisfied.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

95% said they were very satisfied, or satisfied, (2016: 90%).

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

86% said they were very satisfied, or satisfied, (2016: 79%).

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

Only 35% are very satisfied, or satisfied with sports facilities, however a significant proportion, 36%, did not have a opinion, which we interpret as people who may not be that bothered to have/use sports facilities, whilst on holiday.  If you strip out those who have no opinion, then still only 55% are either very satisfied or satisfied (2016: 50%), and 6% are unhappy with facilities or the lack of them, (2016: 4%).  Sport doesn't seem to be a major priority for many of our respondents.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

Only 50% of people are very satisfied, or satisfied with watersport facilities, (2016: 41%).  However, if you strip out the 179 respondents who have no opinion, (perhaps people who don't partake in these activities), then 73% are either very satisfied or satisfied, (2016: 71%).

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

Around 26% are happy with parking, and 23% unhappy with parking - in 2016 it was 24% and 21% respectively.

Here is a table summarising your responses over all our surveys, excluding those who had no opinion - perhaps people who mostly walk whilst in Kalkan.

The trend suggests people have become more unhappy with parking facilities in Kalkan over recent years.  Given the chaos that often prevails we are a little surprised that as many as 40% of those who had an opinion think parking arrangements are fine.

The poor results for the 2014 survey probably reflect the roadworks in the old town between November 2013 and May 2014.  Subsequent year's figures were better, but in this latest survey we appear to have gone backwards.

In earlier surveys we only asked property owners this question, so a like for like comparison is only available for four years.  This year's figures show a few more of you are happy.  Our sense is that things are improving in terms of broadband speed, reliability and cost.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

Around 64% of our respondents said they are either satisfied or very satisfied, (2016: 49%).

If you strip out the people who expressed no opinion, (probably very healthy people who didn't require a doctor), then 83% are either very satisfied or satisfied, (2016: 75%).

Remember that if you ever need medical services you can find contact details in the KTLN Business Directory - Medical Section

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

64% of people are very satisfied, or satisfied with rubbish collection, (2016: 60%). Only 7% are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (2016: 6%).

in the survey we did not ask for your views on recycling of waste because given that currently there is zero official Belediye recycling going on in Kaş district it's difficult to comprehend how anyone could feel anything other than dissatisfied.

The 2016 survey reflected the dreadful water supply problem that hit Kalkan in 2015.  ASAT made significant improvments after that and KTLN provided several updates on water quality testing which demonstrated that Kalkan's water quality is generally excellent.  Unfortuantely the supply which comes all the way from Saklikent remains susceptible to the occasional outage.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

Around 82% of respondents are very satisfied, or satisfied with their Turkish banks - slightly up on our 2016 survey.

Remember if you are drawing money from an ATM in Kalkan it may be cheaper to withdraw sterling and exchange it locally rather than withdrawing Turkish lira.  It may depend on the type of bank card you use and also the relationship your UK bank has with the bank here in Turkey.  For example a Barclays debit card can take sterling from TEB's ATM free of charge.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

A massive 95% of you are happy with the bars in Kalkan.  Similar to our last survey.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

172 people expressed no opinion, (perhaps they didn't hire a car). Of those who expressed an opinion, 89% were satisfied or very satisfied, (2016: 89%).

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

151 people expressed no opinion, (perhaps they have not used coach or dolmuş services). Of those who expressed an opinion, 81% were satisfied or very satisfied, (2016 66%).

We suspect that these numbers reflect the very efficient inter-town services which represent excellent value for money.  Unfortuantely Kalkan still does not have any significant dolmuş services between different parts of town.  This is something of a disappointment to the local population but there are no signs of anything changing.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

329 people expressed no opinion, (perhaps they have not required these services). Of those who expressed an opinion, around 61% were satisfied or very satisfied, (2016: 51%) and 5% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (2016: 11%).  This is an improvement on the previous surveys.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

Many expressed no opinion, (perhaps they have not required these services).  Of those who expressed an opinion, 66% were satisfied or very satisfied, (2016: 61%), and 5% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (2016: 8%).

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

34% expressed no opinion, (perhaps they have not required these services).  Of those who expressed an opinion, 75% were satisfied or very satisfied, (2016: 80%).  PO boxes remain excellent value - 15 lira per annum.

96% are very satisfied, or satisfied with the supermarkets, (2016: 93%).  Satisfaction with supermarkets in Kalkan has grown over the years as chains have brought more choice and lower prices.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

7% expressed no opinion, (perhaps they don't use taxis).  Of those who expressed an opinion, 93% were satisfied or very satisfied, (2016: 85% & 2015:77%).  So year on year it looks like you think the taxi drivers are doing a better job.

Looking back we are not quite sure what happened in 2011, but over recent years the trend has been positive with satisfaction levels moving in the right direction.  That could be in part a reflection of the way the exchange rate has moved over recent years.  However in our latest survey slightly fewer people are happy.  This will no doubt fuel more debate on the price of a bottle of beer!

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

This is only the fourth year we have asked you to rate this.  Previously we had asked you to rate the management of street animals.  This wasn't ideal, as people were confused as to whether they were commenting on the work of the Kalkan Belediye, who have legal responsibility for this, or the work of KAPSA, an organisation set up to protect street animals.  So since the 2014 survey we have split the question into two.

Here is a table summarising your responses over all our surveys.

This is a significant improvement regarding your views on what the Belediye does.  They will be happy to hear of this.  What do you think it is that the Belediye has done (as opposed to KAPSA) to justify such a change in perception?

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

Following on from the previous question, this is the fourth time that the work of KAPSA and its supporters has been voted on.

Here is a table summarising your responses over all our surveys.

Again this represents a significant improvement in terms of how the work of KAPSA is perceived.  All that hard work being recognised.

Looking at your views on the Belediye and KAPSA combined there has been a marked improvement in how their work with street animals is perceived.

For information here is a table that shows the results of previous surveys, before the question was split.

KTLN Kalkan Survey 2020

This is the first time we have asked this question.

49% of respondents are either satisfied or very satisfied with the work of Kaş 4 Kids.  A massive 51% are neutral or have no strong opinion, which suggest that many people are not really aware of the work they do in the local community.  An interesting juxtaposition when compared to Kalkan's animal charity KAPSA.

A reflection of just how bad the traffic has become in Kalkan over the last ten years.  Fewer people happy and more unhappy.  Heading in the wrong direction and going nowhere fast - just like the traffic.

Around 47% had no opinion on this.  Of those who expressed an opinion, only 16% were very satisfied or satisfied (2016: 10%), with 33% either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (2016: 42%).  A slightly better set of numbers but still plenty of room for improvement.

Your comments
In this year's survey we gave respondents the opportunity to provide brief general comments, and we also said:

  • Tell us the thing about Kalkan that delights you the most.
  • Tell us the thing about Kalkan that disappoints you the most.

We had several hundred comments - well over a thousand in fact.  We have read every single comment, categorised them and below we give you a representative flavour of what was said.

Kalkan peopleWhat delights you the most?
There were 468 comments in the section.

We classified the comments into distinct themes.  The top three themes in terms of the number of comments made were as follows:

1st: The wonderful/friendly people in Kalkan - 351 comments.

2nd: Restaurants/food - especially the quality and choice - 213 comments.

3rd: Views/location/scenery - 212 comments.

These are the same top three as the 2016 survey's "delight" comments, in exactly the same order.

Other delights people commented on included: the general atmosphere/ambiance of Kalkan; the weather; the sea & beaches and boat trips.

Please note that in our 468 comments some people mentioned more than one thing about Kalkan that delights them.

What disappoints you the most?
We ignored comments such as "Can't think of anything"; "Nothing disappoints me"; "Having to go home", etc as they are not disappointments as such.  There were 401 valid comments in this section.

LitterAgain we classified the comments into distinct themes.  The top three themes were as follows:

1st: Litter/rubbish (including rubbish left by builders following construction) - 107 comments.

2nd: Over-development of land/construction - 64 comments.

3rd: Problems with street animals (dogs in particular) - 63 comments.

In the 2016 survey the top three "disappointed" themes were 1st: Street animals; 2nd: Over-development of land and 3rd: Litter/rubbish.

Other disappointments people commented on this year include: poor roads and pavements; traffic (too much and bad driving) plus a lack of parking spaces; noise levels at night and prices.

Please note that in our 401 comments some people mentioned more than one thing about Kalkan that disappoints them.

General comments
Here is a selection of the comments that you gave us - good and bad.  We have been careful to ensure that these are representative of the main themes contained in the comments you submitted.

Beautiful location, great area to explore historically rich surroundings, amazing night skies and day views of sea and mountains, clean air, beautiful coastline, small friendly village community.  And some magic I can't explain.

For me without a doubt it is the people who work in Kalkan and make us all so very welcome with their out of this world hospitality. I feel like Norm entering Cheers every time I step out - I don't get the same feeling in London!

Friendly people great relaxing atmosphere wonderful food. Perfect chill out location.

Natural beauty of surrounding areas, it has a strong community spirit. I prefer Kalkan out of season in the Spring and late Autumn. Mild weather and a good quality of life.

That magical feeling that you are returning home.  The people, the place, the views, the restaurants and bars leave you wanting to return time and time again.  There is truly no where like it.  Kalkan steals your heart in every way.

The people are wonderful, most restaurants are lovely. Great bars and shops.  Beach Clubs are plentiful and value for money. The whole ethos of Kalkan is amazing.  Definitely our 'Happy Place’.

The thrill of seeing Kalkan as we come up the hill from Yeşilköy never leaves us. When we see that view the tears come to our eyes (like now!) and we know we are home again.

Views, people, quality of food.  Street animals!  And how much they are loved.

I only like Kalkan out of season now, it has become too brash, too noisy and too commercial during the summer season, fast losing its identity and charm.

Cleanliness and untidiness. Littering. Number of dogs, noisy at night, sometimes aggressive. Speed of scooters in built up areas.

I've always considered Kalkan to be more upmarket than most Turkish towns but the amount of rubbish not being removed by tradespeople and seemingly never being cleared afterwards, coupled with poor quality roads, pavements and planting are very poor. Definitely lets Kalkan down.

Lack of recycling, dog poo on the beach and people leaving their rubbish behind/overflowing bins.

Noise from bars and nightclubs after midnight. Also the laser lights.

Not going to be popular with this one but Roaming dogs have stopped me from taking a stroll on my own.  And tourist feeding dogs/cats whilst in restaurants.

Not the best for disabled access in town. Traffic can get quite busy.

Overdevelopment both in Kalkan and surrounding villages.  The place is being ruined.

Prices creeping up and the number of flashy bars and restaurants opening to the detriment of the traditional laid-back atmosphere.

Slightly less pride in public areas and buildings since the Mayors office was moved to Kaş.

The speed of the traffic and the number of animals that get injured or killed.

Desperately miss KTLN news and information. If you were still reporting as before, we would have some source to review local coronavirus news and travel to/from airport. PLEASE come back.

Hoping to come to Kalkan in August depending on travel restrictions - will be so disappointed if we can’t.

I hope the people of kalkan can survive this pandemic and associated financial implications to enjoy a more stable future hopefully next year.

Sadly because of the coronavirus issues in the UK and Turkey we won’t be able to come this year. Which led to the cancellation of our 3 week June holiday this year. This will be the first time in 18 years, and 21 visits that we won’t be there. So we have booked for 4 weeks stay in June 2021.

Unfortunately had to cancel our trip this year like so many others.  Feel sorry for those in Kalkan they have had a few difficult years but we'll be back.

Kalkan Turkey

Conclusions
Taking the findings as a whole, we believe that the KTLN survey provides, once again, a pretty clear vote of confidence in this wonderful town, on the Turquoise Coast.

But it is also true to say there are similar concerns raised year after year and there is little evidence to indicate that these are being addressed.

From some of the comments we have seen this year it is evident that Coronavirus will take its toll on the tourist season.

Some comments reveal how regular visitors are broken-hearted not to be coming this year.

Others are prepared to hold on and give Kalkan a try out of season if they can find flights.  Most people seem to think that 2021 will be the year when things get back to normal - whatever the new normal looks like.

Keep Calm and Read KTLNAn unforseen consequence
Prompted by the Coronavirus affect on the beautiful place we call home, KTLN has decided to come out of retirement.   If you are surprised, so are we!  This wasn't remotely on the cards however given that so many people are going to miss out on Kalkan this year we felt we should step up and do our bit in keeping you informed during these very strange times.

So KTLN will once again try to make you feel a bit more connected to the place you love.  We will continue to offer a truly independent, objective and reliable service.  We know from your feedback that quite a few of you don't do Facebook so you can't see the plethora of Kalkan pages that have popped up recently.  KTLN can once again be your trusted online source of information.

It's probably fair to say that what we aim to offer is 'KTLN Light'.  There will be no return to Kalkan webcams (Korsan is doing a splendid job in this regard).  The number of published articles may not be quite as frequent as before but we will try to focus on things that are genuinely interesting and directly relevant to Kalkan.  We also have an idea for something new - more on that later.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete this survey.
