Although we believe our survey sample is probably representative of most non-Turkish visitors to Kalkan, the following numbers and percentages relate to our survey sample only

In our analysis, we may extrapolate the data where we believe it makes sense.

We had 590 responses this year - more than last year.  Thank you if you took part.

Remember that many of our 590 respondents represent a household or group of people.  We estimate the total number of people represented is over 1,700. 

Some percentages may not total 100% due to rounding.

The disappointing 2014 survey figures were reversed in the 2015 survey, but this year things have slipped back a little.

69% of respondents are either very satisfied or satisfied with the peace and quiet in Kalkan. (2015 survey: 69%), whilst 12% are either very dissatisfied or dissatisfied (2015 survey: 12% last year).   Looking at your comments, we conclude that issues are related to loud music from bars, and barking dogs at night.  [Also see "Your comments" later in this report].

No change here year on year, with virtually 100% saying the views are great!  Who would have guessed??!!

How satisfied are you with the recreational facilities?

81% are very satisfied, or satisfied with access, (2015 survey: 80%).

70% are very satisfied, or satisfied with the beachclubs, (prior three survey years were also 70%).  If you strip out those who have no opinion, (perhaps they don't use beachclubs), then 89% are either very satisfied or satisfied.

90% said they were very satisfied, or satisfied, (2015 survey: 85%).  If you strip out those who have no opinion, (perhaps they don't take boat trips), then 97% are either very satisfied or satisfied (2015 survey: 94%).

79% said they were very satisfied, or satisfied, (2015 survey: 76%).  If you strip out those who have no opinion, then 91% are either very satisfied or satisfied (2015 survey: 91%).

Only 26% are very satisfied, or satisfied with sports facilities, however a significant proportion, 47%, did not have a opinion, which we interpret as people who may not be that bothered to have/use sports facilities, whilst on holiday.  If you strip out those who have no opinion, then still only 50% are either very satisfied or satisfied (2015 survey: 43%), and 4% are unhappy with facilities -or the lack of them, (2015 survey: 7%).  A slight improvement on last year.

Only 41% of people are very satisfied, or satisfied with watersport facilities, (2015 survey: 37%).  However, if you strip out the 249 respondents who have no opinion, (perhaps people who don't partake in these activities), then 71% are either very satisfied or satisfied, (2015 survey: 64%).

Around 24% are happy with parking, and 21% unhappy with parking - last year it was 24% and 19% respectively.

The trend suggests people are getting more unhappy with parking facilities in Kalkan.  Things are still not moving in the right direction.

The poor results for the 2014 survey probably reflect the roadworks in the old town between November 2013 and May 2014. Subsequent year's figures are better, but still far from being exemplary.

You are not quite as impressed with the electricity service this time.  It has been worse.  Outages are certainly less frequent than they used to be.

In earlier surveys we only asked property owners this question, so a like for like comparison is only available for three years.  This year's figures are not too dissimilar to last year.

Around 49% of our respondents said they are either satisfied or very satisfied, (2015 survey: 46%).

If you strip out the people who expressed no opinion, (probably very healthy people who didn't require a doctor), then 75% are either very satisfied or satisfied, (2015 survey: 72%).

The percentages are less favourable this time - perhaps not surprising given the levels of illness that we experienced in 2015 thanks to the water supply system.  With less than half of you happy with the water supply it's hardly a ringing endorsement of the supplier ASAT. 

 

How satisfied are you with local businesses?

Around 80% of respondents are very satisfied, or satisfied with their Turkish banks - similar to last year. 

Remember if you are drawing money from an ATM in Kalkan it may be cheaper to withdraw sterling and exchange it locally rather than withdrawing Turkish lira.  It may depend on the relationship your UK bank has with the bank here in Turkey.  The following bank ATMs dispense sterling in Kalkan: Garanti Bank, TEB and the HSBC stand-alone ATM.

A massive 94% of you are happy with the bars in Kalkan.  Similar to last year's survey.  [Editor: Mine's a Long Island Iced Tea if you're asking].

36% expressed no opinion, (perhaps they didn't hire a car). Of those who expressed an opinion, 89% were satisfied or very satisfied, (2015 survey: 89%).

66% expressed no opinion, (perhaps they have not used coach services). Of those who expressed an opinion, 66% were satisfied or very satisfied, (2015 survey: 71%).

38% expressed no opinion, (perhaps they have not used the dolmuş service).  Of those who expressed an opinion, 67% were satisfied or very satisfied, (2015 survey: 72%), and 14% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (slightly up on last year).

69% expressed no opinion, (perhaps they have not required these services). Of those who expressed an opinion, around 51% were satisfied or very satisfied, (2015 survey: 41%) and 11% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (2015 survey: 11%).  This is an improvement on the previous year's survey.

This is the first time we have asked about insurance brokers.  68% expressed no opinion, (perhaps they have not required these services). Of those who expressed an opinion, around 66% were satisfied or very satisfied and 4% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied.

88% expressed no opinion. Of those who expressed an opinion, 39% were satisfied or very satisfied, and 6% were dissatisfied.  Most were neutral.  We may drop this question next year.

93% are very satisfied, or satisfied with the supermarkets.  7% hold no strong view either way. Less than 1% are unhappy.  All very similar to last year.

13% expressed no opinion, (perhaps they don't use taxis).  Of those who expressed an opinion, 85% were satisfied or very satisfied, (2015 survey: 77%), and 5% were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, (2015 survey: 12%).

So it looks like the taxi drivers are doing a good job.  And they are about to become even more popular.  The good news is that not only have taxi prices stayed the same since 2012, but this year they are actually coming down.

Looking back we are not quite sure what happened in 2011, but over recent years the trend has been positive - most people are happy.  That could be in part a reflection of the way the exchange rate has moved over the last year or so.

This is only the third year we have asked you to rate this.  Previously we had asked you to rate the management of street animals.  However, this wasn't ideal, as people were confused as to whether they were commenting on the work of the Kalkan Belediye, who have legal responsibility for this, or the work of KAPSA, an organisation set up to protect street animals.  So since the 2014 survey we have split the question into two.

This is the second year we have asked this question.

24% of respondents are either satisfied or very satisfied with the work of Kalkander Association.  A massive 75% are neutral or have no strong opinion, which suggest that people are still not really aware of what they do.

A reflection of how bad the traffic has become in Kalkan over recent years.  Fewer people happy and more unhappy.

Around 61% had no opinion on this.  Of those who expressed an opinion, only 10% were very satisfied or satisfied, with 42% either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied.  About 49% had a neutral view on this subject.  These results are similar to last year's survey.

In this year's survey we gave respondents the opportunity to provide brief general comments, and we also said:

  • Tell us the thing about Kalkan that delights you the most.
  • Tell us the thing about Kalkan that disappoints you the most.

We had several hundred comments - well over a thousand in fact.  We have read them all, and below we give you a representative flavour of what was said.

Kalkan peopleWhat delights you the most?
There were 497 comments in the section.  

We classified the comments into distinct themes.  The top three themes in terms of the number of comments made were as follows:

1st: The wonderful/friendly people in Kalkan - 384 comments.

2nd: Restaurants/food - especially the quality and choice - 238 comments.

3rd: Views/location/scenery - 198 comments.

These are the same top three as last year's "delight" comments, in exactly the same order.

Other delights people commented on included: the general atmosphere/ambiance of Kalkan; the weather; the sea & beaches and boat trips. 

Please note that in our 497 comments some people mentioned more than one thing about Kalkan that delights them.

Kalkan dogsWhat disappoints you the most?
We ignored comments such as "Can't think of anything"; "Nothing disappoints me"; "Having to go home", etc as they are not disappointments as such.  There were 430 valid comments in this section. 

Again we classified the comments into distinct themes.  The top three themes were as follows:

1st: Problems with street animals (dogs in particular) - 171 comments.

2nd: Over development of land - 57 comments.

3rd: Litter/rubbish (including rubbish left by builders following construction) - 46 comments.

Last year's top three "disappointed" themes were 1st: Street animals; 2nd: Late night noise and 3rd Over development of land.

Other disappointments people commented on this year include: traffic (too much and bad driving) plus a lack of parking spaces, and the poor water supply (no surprise given how many people were taken ill last year). 

Please note that in our 430 comments some people mentioned more than one thing about Kalkan that disappoints them.

General comments
Here is a representative selection of general comments that you gave us.

Although Kalkan has changed over the years it is still the place I choose to visit each year. The people who live and work there make it the place it is.  Each year we talk about going elsewhere but continue to return.

Before my first visit to Kalkan I had never been to a place more than once.  Kalkan is a very special place, the friendliness of the people and quality and choice of restaurants is amazing.

Coming to Kalkan twice in 2016, but hoping for a better experience with the dog situation. Will base any return visits in the future on that.

Having visited three times and hoping to return again soon I think Kalkan is a gem and hope it doesn't change too much in the coming years.

I am not as happy today as I was 6 years ago.  I am not yet ready to think of moving, but I'm leaning more towards that option than before.

I hope people don't stay away from Turkey and especially Kalkan this year and that scaremongering in certain parts of the media doesn't scare people off.

I love Kalkan and it's my second home. I  consider myself extremely fortunate to own an apartment in such a beautiful place.

In the years I've been coming to Kalkan there have been lots of changes, not always for the better.  It still retains its charm though and looking forward to seeing the opening of the rebuilt harbour restaurants.

It is such a shame that due to recent world events a lot of people are now too frightened to come to Turkey as Kalkan is such a magical place.  I just hope all the local businesses, that work so hard, can survive the drop in tourism and I for one will continue to support them whenever I can.

Its paradise on earth and just love going out to our place in the sun.

Kalkan is a beautiful place. The people are friendly and generous of spirit. The views are fantastic. Overall we love it!

Kalkan is a nice place and the people are too.  l like the Turkish hospitality

Kalkan needs to see & hear more from the Kas Belediye officials, more input by them, more information.

Kalkan needs to work hard at retaining its charm and charisma - there are too many alternative holiday destinations that now surpass Kalkan for location and value for money.  Unfortunately,Turkey is in the press for all the wrong reasons so it will have to work harder if it wants to attract a constant flow of tourists.

Love it really that's why we keep coming back

Make more friends here each year, always find something or someone new, wish we could bottle the view from the main road when you first arrive... (the anticipation!!)

My heart sings when I come round the headland and see the view over Kalkan Bay.  It feels like coming home.

Overall happy with Kalkan - that's why we have been visiting for over 14 years. Hope that it manages to keep the charm which keeps its special.

Overall, Kalkan is a great holiday destination, the dogs being my only real complaint.

Paradise.  Hope it doesn't get spoilt.  Keep it a secret.

Perfect place for a holiday. Five star in all areas. We talk about it all year round, past holidays and looking forward to the coming year. Fabulous experience every year & looking forward to a warm welcome from all our friends.

There has been a change since Kas began being responsible for Kalkan, for the worse. I hope Kalkan manages to retain its special individuality despite not being master of its own destiny anymore.

We call Kalkan our bit of paradise, hence visiting every year for the last 10 years.

We fell in love with Kalkan in 2000 and have been coming ever since!!

We love coming to Kalkan and hope that we may continue to feel as safe there as we have done up to now.

We were planning to come this year but some of my party were concerned about the present 'climate'.   Personally I think Kalkan is probably as safe as anywhere and am considering it anyway.

We've only be to Kalkan twice but the fact that we're all booked to return again this year tells you just how hard we've fallen for it.

Wish we had found Kalkan earlier.

Keep Calm and Read KTLNConclusions
Taking the findings as a whole, we reckon that the KTLN survey provides, once again, a pretty clear vote of confidence in this wonderful town, on the Turquoise Coast. 

But it is also true to say there are similar concerns raised year after year and there is little evidence to indicate that these are being addressed. 

From some of the comments we have seen this year it is evident that a small number of people are calling it a day, as far as Kalkan is concerned.  We also had some comments from people who have been put off by a perceived threat from terrorism or the general instability in the region. 

For our part KTLN has tried to counter the scaremongering by putting these risks into context, but it's hard when you are up against the headline grabbing mainstream media.

Nevertheless, 95% of people who were in Kalkan last year have told us they are coming back this year.  Let's hope the airlines keep enough flights to get people here.  We hope that these survey results demonstrate why people come back time after time.  And we hope you manage to get your Kalkan fix in 2016.
