Look to the skies - Perseid meteor shower peaks 11th to 13th August

If you are in Kalkan over the coming weeks you should be tilting your head back to take a good look at the night sky because it's time for the annual spectacle that is the Perseid meteor shower.

Kalkan is a great vantage point for watching these meteors - also called shooting stars, but this year there is also a special event taking place in Patara at the peak viewing time for the Perseids.  We tell you more below.

What are the Perseids?
The Perseid meteor shower is an annual event that is so bright against the night sky you don’t need binoculars or a telescope. This year the Perseids will be visible between 17th July and 24th August but the peak of the meteor shower is between 11th and 13th August.  This is when the shower is at its most spectacular.  There may be more than 50 meteors an hour flashing across the sky.

Lycian Parliament building Patara  - Perseid talk and music evening
For the first time this year the Kalkan Culture House, in association with Kaş Belediye is putting on something rather special that you might be interested in.

They are inviting everyone to go along to the Lycian Parliament building in Patara which is an ideal low light venue to watch the night sky.  In addition to the spectacular Perseids there will be a presentation on the subject in Turkish which will be translated into English, plus live music.  It promises to be an evening to remember.  And it's completely free.

The date for your diary is Sunday 12th August 2018.

Patara Perseid evening

Free transport is being provided from Kalkan with minibuses departing from outside the Belediye offices on Karayolları Sokak at 21.30

Please note that the return journey will be quite late - perhaps as late as 02.00.  You can make your own way there and back if you prefer.

If you wish to use the free minibus service it would be helpful if you would confirm your attendance so that the appropriate number of vehicles can be made available.  Contact KTLN to confirm you would like a place on a minibus.

Other viewing points
If you prefer not to go to Patara there are other good places to go where there is no background light.  A moonlight cruise on a boat would be ideal.  Or you could head out of Kalkan and drive up the mountains, far away from the street lights and other artificial light - perhaps Islamlar or Bezirgan or park up in a safe place somewhere along the coast road to Kaş.

Don't forget to make a wish!
